In the interest of capping off the year's work, during the next week and a half or so I'll be featuring 25 individual songs--each from a different session--with a short entry about each here from the perspective of the person who recorded it. I hope that this will make refreshing reading to anyone who might have an interest in this kind of thing.
Why did I chose these 25 songs? The answer to this question --"why?" -- is what each entry aims to unpack.
In addition to the reductive/subjective nature of the selection process, the song also had to meet two criteria:
1. The song had to be posted on the website in 2011. (As of this writing on January 1, 2012, many, many of the sessions I recorded for Daytrotter, including some of my favorites, have not been posted to the website yet.)
2. The song had to be recorded by me. (Sam Patlove, my good friend and the guy who had the unenviable, mind-numbing job of mastering almost every single session I recorded for Daytrotter, also worked for me at the studio whenever I wasn't able to. So, for example, I would gladly like to include Unknown Mortal Orchestra's "Thought Ballune" and Femi Kuti's "Nobody Beg You", both fine songs, in this list, but I didn't record those, Sam did.)
On a final note, it should go without saying that lists reflect the tastes of the person making the list more than anything, and this list is no different. I don't book Daytrotter, but if I booked it according to what contemporary music I listen to then there would be a lot more psych rock, hardcore country, shoegaze, weird synth stuff, and krautrock in this list. Still, this list feels somehow OK and representative of the year--my year, at least. But if anyone is unclear on the subject, please see: "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aesthetics".
Thank you. I wish everyone a happy and peaceful year in 2012.
